Keynote speakers list confirmed!

April 17, 2015 by Axel Polleres
We are working at full steam to prepare for a great SEMANTiCS2015 in Vienna in September…. Since this week, the set of invited speakers has been fixed and we are quite excited about the distinguished set of speakers we could attract for this years’ edition of SEMANTiCS: we are pleased to announce high profile speakers from industry (NASA, EPAM, YAHOO), academia (Leibniz Information Centre for Economics and Univ. Politecnica de Madrid)  and public administration (City of Vienna) who will share their latest insights on applications of Semantic technologies with us:

  • Peter Mika (Yahoo Research!) who has been active in the Semantic Web community for a long time and is the Director of the Semantic Search division at Yahoo Labs, London, UK since April 2015, will give us insights about "Semantic Search at Yahoo".
  • Jeanne Holm (NASA), Chief Knowledge Architect at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, will share insights on Data Mining for Smart Cities with us in her talk "Data Mining for Good: How Linked Data is Transforming Cities”.
  • Sam Rehman (EPAM), CTO at EPAM Systems, a global provider of software engineering and IT consulting services with over 10,000 employees worldwide, will tell us about applications in IoT in his talk "Internet of Things and Semantic: Model both the real and virtual world"
  • Oscar Corcho (UPM), Associate Professor at the AI deparment of Univ. Politecnica de Madrid will give a keynote about "Slow-cooked data and APIs in the world of Big Data: the view from a city perspective”
  • Klaus Tochtermann (ZBW), Director of the Leibniz Information Centre for Economics in Kiel, Germany, and former director of the Know--Center in Graz, Austria, who has received the national “Library of the Year 2014” award from the German Library Association (dbv) will be giving a talk about use cases in the area of digital libraries -  "Mining the deep web for scientific libraries - the role and evolution of semantic technologies”.

Last, but not least, it is our great pleasure that Ulrike Huemer (CIO City of Vienna) will give the welcome address: Vienna has one of the longest active and successful Open Data strategies, which has been awarded with several International prises. It is therefore not only a great honour to have a representative giving the welcome address, but with the CIO also an expert in topics highly relevant to the conference - with Semantic technologies gaining more and more importance in Open Data and public administrations, the Opening address therefore rounds up the overall “trend" in this years’ SEMANTiCS around smart cities topics … let’s see: we are excited to see in your submissions! Check out the open calls at http://semantics.cc/open-calls (deadlines: May 22nd - research paper abstracts, June 17th - Posters and Demos, July 1st- industry presentations) and looking very much forward to seeing you in Vienna in September!
